Department of Education issued the DepEd Calendar 2024-2025, which returns to a traditional school year (from July 2024 to May 2025). It’s aligned with Republic Act No. 7797 and Order No. 009, s. 2024, and extends the year to 220 days to improve educational quality. This adjustment supports the MATATAG Agenda, which emphasizes structured and strategic learning and includes important events such as Brigada Eskwela, EOSY Rites, and so on. All private sectors also must follow these guidelines.

DepEd calendar 2024 usually comes in Republic Act No. 7797, revised by RA 11480, and aims to provide a balanced academic schedule. This learning approach may align your educational system with great historical norms. It also ensures extensive learning opportunities for students throughout the Philippines.

However, the issuance of this calendar aspires the DepEd to provide all essential parameters for educational departments and community learning centers (CLCs). It enables them to accomplish the instructional period.

  • Schools and CLCs: These are based on guidelines to enhance instructional time and support the MATATAG Agenda. Ultimately, it aims at elevating education quality in the Philippines.
  • Private Schools and Universities: They must follow these guidelines, including the required number of class days and start date.
  • Immediate Action: All relevant officials including Assistant Secretaries, Undersecretaries, Regional Directors, and School Heads, must ensure strict obedience to these directives of DepEd.

The adjustments are part of a broader plan to revert to a June start and April-May break by the academic year 2025-2026. This strategy aims to align with traditional schedules and conveniently get feedback from educators and parents. Thus, DepEd’s focus remains on maintaining instructional quality while managing vacation schedules effectively.

However, these guidelines may extend to different schools, colleges and universities. Usually, all academic institutes work on this efficient calendar system to create an enhanced educational environment.

EOSY Rites are going to be conducted from the 14th to the 15th of April 2025. So, we’ve issued a separate guide to schools on conducting EOSY Rites:

This order is reliably effective on approval, issuance, and publication on our official DepEd website. It’ll be recorded with the Office of the National Administrate Register (ONAR) – at the University of the Philippines – Law Center (UP LC), located in UP Diliman, Quezon City.

Sara Duterte, Vice President, one day before her resignation, signed Department Order #008, which emphasizes updating the school calendar. The order shows the administration’s effort to revert to the pre-pandemic academic schedule, as stated:

“Under the great guidance of the President, DepEd recognizes the insistence of reverting the school calendar to the pre-pandemic opening of classes.”

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. approved this updated adjustment On May 21, 2024. It happens in response to public concerns about the class schedule. This update aims to move back to the traditional school year arrangement gradually.

Earlier in April, Duterte had suggested that an immediate return to the old calendar was impractical due to the need for breaks for both teachers and students. Initially, DepEd planned a gradual shift until 2028. So, this plan has been expedited to align with the new end date of April 15, 2025.

Therefore, the new schedule represents the beginning of a gradual shift, as directed by Marcos, from the June-to-March academic year. Its further details are associated with the Presidential Communications Office’s announcements and DepEd Order No. 008.

DepEd aims to improve management and operations in schools and CLCs to enhance teaching and learning, according to the MATATAG Agenda.

All guidelines apply to public elementary and secondary schools and CLCs nationwide.

  • Alternative Delivery Modes (ADMs): It comes with flexible learning approaches including print, audio, and online resources.
  • Blended Learning Delivery Modality (BLDM): It combines in-person classes with distance learning methods.
  • Brigada Eskwela Week: This event prepares schools for the start of classes through community involvement.
  • Distance Learning Programs: There are Online Distant Learning (ODL) programs and Modular Distant Learning (MDL) programs.
  • Extra-Curricular Activities: Voluntary, non-graded activities outside regular class hours
  • Homeschooling Program: It’s a managed program primarily at home for K-12 education.
  • Modular Distance Learning (MDL): It comes with the use of self-learning modules for instruction
  • In-Service Training (INSET): Professional development for teachers to address identified needs.
  • Online Distance Learning (ODL): Utilizes internet technologies for remote classes.
  • General Guidelines;
  • Learning delivery
  • School year start and end
  • Suspensions
  • National and local holidays

All educational institutes must arrange monthly meetings with parents to discuss student progress and relevant professional development topics.

DepEd plans to reduce the 2024-2025 school year by 15 days and cut the usual 180 school days to 165. DepEd Assistant Secretary Francis Bringas announced that SY 2024-2025 will begin on July 29, 2024, and conclude on March 31, 2025. To compensate for the shorter school year, DepEd is preparing to implement unique teaching strategies to ensure all competencies are met. The Bureau of Learning Delivery (BLD) is making a detailed plan to maintain education quality despite the reduced days.

This shift comes after President Marcos directed the immediate return to a June-March academic calendar.

DepEd reverts to a June-March educational calendar three years after swapping to an August-June schedule. Thus, consultations were usually held on January 15, 2024, which revealed general agreement among schools, parents, teachers, and student leaders. Then minor adjustments were suggested and DepEd is targeting the 2025-2026 school year for a potential June opening, while the 2024-2025 year may still start in July.

However, the Teacher’s Dignity Coalition (TDC) and private schools focused on the need for careful consideration of the implications of this transition. It’s essential to avoid a rushed shift that might result in only a short break for students and teachers.

So, moving back to the old calendar can prevent you from challenges posed by the summer heat, but it might also lead to disruptions during the rainy season. Well, some parents support the return to the June-March schedule for the ease, convenience and familiarity of their children.

Eventually, DepEd continue to evaluate the feedback of students, schools, and their parents and plan the transition if changes are implemented.

DepEd Order No. 009, s. 2024 outlines the schedule for the school year 2024-2025. This adjustment marks a gradual return to the traditional June-March calendar by the 2025-2026 school year. So, with 165 instructional days planned, schools have a clear framework and can effectively prepare and deliver quality education under these updated guidelines.
