Department of Education issued the DepEd Calendar 2024-2025, which returns to a traditional school year (from July 2024 to May 2025). It’s aligned with Republic Act No. 7797 and Order No. 009, s. 2024, and extends the year to 220 days to improve educational quality. This adjustment supports the MATATAG Agenda, which emphasizes structured and strategic learning and includes important events such as Brigada Eskwela, EOSY Rites, and so on. All private sectors also must follow these guidelines. 

DepEd calendar 2024 usually comes in Republic Act No. 7797, revised by RA 11480, and aims to provide a balanced academic schedule. In the Philippines, the updated implementing guidelines represent the consistently improved teaching-learning process and well-managing college activities. The adjustments are part of a broader plan to revert to a June start and April-May break by the academic year 2025-2026. 60-Day Vacation for Teachers and Learners

No. 009 The DepEd Order of 2024 introduces a 60-day vacation for teachers and learners during the End of School Year (EOSY) break. The first 30 days are dedicated to personal relaxation with no school-related duties for students and teachers. In contrast, the second 30 days feature numerous activities. These are considered optional activities, including;

 All learners and tutors must participate in these extra activities.

Nevertheless, all tutors who are involved in the NLC will receive vacation service credits (VSCs) per DO 014, s. 2024. This order is reliably effective on approval, issuance, and publication on our official DepEd website. It’ll be recorded with the Office of the National Administrate Register (ONAR) – at the University of the Philippines – Law Center (UP LC), located in UP Diliman, Quezon City.

Official Statement

Sara Duterte, Vice President, one day before her resignation, signed Department Order #008, which emphasizes updating the school calendar. The order shows the administration’s effort to revert to the pre-pandemic academic schedule, as stated:

“Under the great guidance of the President, DepEd recognizes the insistence of reverting the school calendar to the pre-pandemic opening of classes.”

Presidential Agreement

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. approved this updated adjustment On May 21, 2024. It happens in response to public concerns about the class schedule. This update aims to move back to the traditional school year arrangement gradually.

Previous Statements

Earlier in April, Duterte had suggested that an immediate return to the old calendar was impractical due to the need for breaks for both teachers and students. Initially, DepEd planned a gradual shift until 2028. So, this plan has been expedited to align with the new end date of April 15, 2025.

Therefore, the new schedule represents the beginning of a gradual shift, as directed by Marcos, from the June-to-March academic year. Its further details are associated with the Presidential Communications Office’s announcements and DepEd Order No. 008.

DepEd Calendar 2024-2026

DepEd plans to reduce the 2024-2025 school year by 15 days and cut the usual 180 school days to 165. DepEd Assistant Secretary Francis Bringas announced that SY 2024-2025 will begin on July 29, 2024, and conclude on March 31, 2025. To compensate for the shorter school year, DepEd is preparing to implement unique teaching strategies to ensure all competencies are met. The Bureau of Learning Delivery (BLD) is making a detailed plan to maintain education quality despite the reduced days.

This shift comes after President Marcos directed the immediate return to a June-March academic calendar.

DepEd reverts to a June-March educational calendar three years after swapping to an August-June schedule. Thus, consultations were usually held on January 15, 2024, which revealed general agreement among schools, parents, teachers, and student leaders. Then minor adjustments were suggested and DepEd is targeting the 2025-2026 school year for a potential June opening, while the 2024-2025 year may still start in July.

However, the Teacher’s Dignity Coalition (TDC) and private schools focused on the need for careful consideration of the implications of this transition. It’s essential to avoid a rushed shift that might result in only a short break for students and teachers.

So, moving back to the old calendar can prevent you from challenges posed by the summer heat, but it might also lead to disruptions during the rainy season. Well, some parents support the return to the June-March schedule for the ease, convenience and familiarity of their children.

Eventually, DepEd continue to evaluate the feedback of students, schools, and their parents and plan the transition if changes are implemented.
